How to find Peace and Calm During the COVID19 Pandemic

Are you feeling anxious, worried, panicked, scared or lonely? Those feelings are a normal reaction to the very abnormal situation we are all in, due to the COVID19 pandemic.

In times like these, our anxiety and fear increase because there is so much uncertainty.  The mind wants to believe that it is in control, and that life is predictable. When things don’t go as planned, the mind “freaks out” and we can be deluged with emotions.

In February, I found it difficult coming to terms with the fact that my long-awaited trip to China had to be cancelled. Of course, I lost my desire to go due to the break out of the coronavirus; I wanted to stay healthy. Yet, I was also disappointed and sad at the change in plans. I was also feeling deep grief for all those sick and dying from COVID19, and afraid of what lay ahead. As you see, we humans are multifaceted and quite capable of feeling many and mixed of emotions.

Physical Distancing, Irritability and Feelings of Isolation

Now that we are physically distancing and staying in place, we are more aware than ever of the uncertainty of the future. People are stressed because of health and financial concerns. When we are stressed, we get irritable and those close to us are most affected. Couples are finding it challenging to regulate spending so much time together. Some are finding the old saying, “Familiarity breeds contempt” to be true, which leads to an increase in relationship conflict.

Traumatized by the COVID19 Pandemic

Whilst tending to my own feelings and listening to clients, I have become acutely aware of how people are being extremely psychologically impacted by the COVID19 pandemic. Many of you are having trouble relaxing, and are reacting by reaching for food, alcohol, or other unhealthy ways to comfort yourself.

Others are obsessively worrying – we worry about getting the virus ourselves and then spreading it to loved ones and vice versa. It is not surprising we are having anxiety dreams, nightmares, and problems sleeping.
